Material Testing

Wide Coil Testing

To assure the quality of incoming purchased wide coils, Tempel Steel:

  • tests samples of every coil for magnetic and mechanical properties prior to receipt or uses test results from certified suppliers;
  • utilizes test data to ensure supplier process capability for all Tempel materials meets or exceeds our product requirements;
  • reviews quality and delivery performance data with each supplier to improve overall performance levels regularly;
  • maintains an active product development program for analysis and qualification of new products from different suppliers.

Epstein Testing

Each wide coil of steel is tested for specified magnetic and mechanical properties before it is approved for shipment to our raw material inventory. The Epstein testing conducted at Tempel measures core loss and peak permeability. Our tests ensure all properties comply with gauge/grade specifications and provide assurance of consistent customer quality.

Mechanical Inspection & Testing

The Tempel designed and built Gamma Tester makes nine thickness measurements to ensure minimum variation in thickness. Simultaneously, the tester measures surface roughness and hardness.

We use industry recognized standards for applicable mechanical and physical characteristics on lamination materials.

Most importantly, we track our materials from wide coil to finished goods and note any tests performed on that material.

Franklin Testing

Franklin Testing provides a method of testing single strips of flat rolled electrical steel for surface insulation resistance under predetermined voltage and pressure conditions.

Specific information is provided in our material specifications which can be requested through links on this website in our materials available in the regional section.
