DG Cores
Tempel is now offering Distributed Gap (DG) cores 9/15/2007 Tempel is now offering Distributed Gap (DG) cores to meet the demands of an expanding market segment for distribution transformers that use these cores in many applications. Demand for Distributed Gap (DG) Cores is strong because of the ageing distribution transformer infrastructure in the United States and the need to build electrical distribution grid infrastructure in developing countries such as Mexico, China and India. Distributed gap cores also are known to be very energy efficient and many companies are using designs that incorporate this type of core to meet TP-1 energy efficiency requirements. Tempel has acquired a Unicore Distributed Gap (DG) Core Winder. The Unicore cuts pre-programmed steel lengths used to build each core to exact specifications. Several companies have already contacted Tempel Steel about supplying them with DG Cores. There may be a number of strong opportunities for DG Core business in the Canadian, United States, Mexico, China and India markets as well. Tempel has identified DG Core consumption in North America to be an estimated at 100-million pounds annually and growing with the need to replace aging transformers. The Unicore Distributed Gap Core Winder is state-of-the-art. It's a computer controlled system capable of "distributing" the gap from one wind or "pass" to the next. The Unicore Winder can be programmed to produce individual laps of the core, bends at the corners, as well as gaps at appropriate positions. An Operator collects each lap and wraps it around the previous wrap until the core is completed. It's also configurable to manufacturer a number of DG Core formats (bend angles, patterns of the gaps, dimensions of the core, etc.) The Unicore can handle strip widths up to 11.8 inches and is virtually unlimited in the length and width of the cores produced. Depending on DG core size, the capacity for this one machine is approximately 1.2 million pounds a year. Tempel expects the Unicore machine to create new business opportunities opening doors to many customers currently buying DG cores from Tempel competitors and prospects who currently wind their own cores in-house. It is expected that many companies that currently manufacture cores themselves will not have the internal capacity to manufacture all of their core requirements and will find it advantageous to purchase cores rather than investing in additional equipment. Tempel is actively seeking additional business in this market segment and will purchase additional equipment to meet the increasing demand.
