Toroidal Transformer - Tape Wound Transformers
Tempel manufactures Toroidal Wound cores for the toroidal transformer manufacturing industry. Tape wound core toroidal transformers are made by wrapping thin long strips of magnetic material around a winding mandrel. Originally toroidal transformers used thin ring-shaped laminations stamped from electrical steel, where the steel from the center was scrap material. The transformer core was made by stacking these rings to the desired height. The laminated stack reduced core eddy currents that results in lower eddy currents and in lower core losses. The thinner the laminations, the lower the losses were, but the more time it took to process and stack the laminations. Winding tape wound core toroidal transformers were much faster than stacking laminations; hence the use of thinner materials is more practical with toroidal cores. Tape wound core toroids are usually preferred over ferrites for applications provided the operating frequency is not too high. Because of the adoption of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) TP-1 standards some manufacturers of power transformers are again turning to toroidal shapes. Toroidal power transformers are the high performers. They offer the smallest size (by volume and weight), with less leakage inductance, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI). Their windings cool better because of the proportionally larger surface area. Operating frequency is a major parameter in selecting core material. Low frequency applications usually utilize either tape wound or laminated silicon steel cores. Moderate frequency applications utilize tape wound or laminated nickel iron cores. High frequency applications usually use ferrite cores. Today, tape wound core toroidal transformers can be made with strip as thin as 0.007" or 0.0003mm. They are available in alloys of silicon steel and nickel alloys. Tempel produces tape wound core toroidal transformers in a wide variety of materials and sizes. Toroidal Core Specifications
