Welding
Along with supplying the finest quality stamped laminations, Tempel offers welding of transformer and motor laminations.

Tempel couples its thorough knowledge of electrical steel with a long history of welding to create assembled cores of the highest standards. Welding creates a mechanically strong assembly that eliminates the need for nuts, bolts, brackets and insulators. Tempel's welding also improves process cycle time by allowing customers to handle completed cores and reduces labor in your facilities. We also have the capability of adding insulation paper, mounting hardware and other accessories to form completed subassemblies.

Tempel's welding operators go through intense initial training and then perform continuous education while in the Core Assembly areas. They are taught welding concepts, manual welding techniques, semi-automated machine assisted welding, and programming computers for robotically controlled welders. Most welders are certified through a variety of organizations and many are qualified as instructors and certifiers in their own right.

Tempel is skilled at welding silicon and cold rolled steel, either coated or bare. Certain applications call for specific types of welds. Depending on the customer's goals, the following welds are currently available:

  • Plasma and TIG welding melts areas of existing cores and form welds using no additional material reducing or eliminating the need for cleat or weld notch features.
  • Traditional MIG, pulse and spray MIG welding is done using a wire-fed system and can be used to make cores part of the overall structure of the equipment.
  • Laser welding creates the smallest heat affected zone and is being applied to a wide variety of high efficiency electrical equipment.
All types of weld create a strong bond that allows the cores to go into the winding process and, depending on design, carry the structural load of the motor.

Determining which welding procedure to use depends on requirements such as weight and the overall size and shape of the part.

When thinking about purchasing welded products, it is important to look at the total cost saving. Companies, who apply their own welds, will have increased capital expenditures and additional lag time in the overall process.
